Each year, I my goal is to make one thing related to birthday celebrations separate from presents. Last year, it was a fabric bunting from Amanda Soule’s book, The Creative Family. This year, a felt birthday crown. The crown pattern came from the book, The Creative Family, mentioned above. I modified the template by taking [...]

Felt rabbit wallet
August 2nd, 2010 · No Comments · crafty
Something I worked on recently. The felt wallet was inspired by a post on Childhood Magic [note: sadly, since writing this post, that blog has shut down]. V loves the color red and animals such as rabbits. The bunny shape was copied from Purl Bee’s Bunny Finger Puppet tutorial.
Attempting a summer nature table
July 30th, 2010 · No Comments · crafty
I’ve been experimenting on and off with creating seasonal displays over the past year. This is my attempt at a summer nature table: a handful of shells, some stones that V collected, the beautiful picture book Summer, by Gerda Muller, and an empty vase which I hope to fill with some wildflowers soon. A nature [...]

Dollhouse squatters ISO futons
July 26th, 2010 · No Comments · crafty
Our hand-me-down dollhouse has been without furniture for a while. No place to sleep, no place to sit or eat dinner. Yes, they live like squatters. My husband likes to remind me that I gave away the furniture set that came with the dollhouse in a fit of decluttering. So I decided to make some [...]

My friend L came to visit for brunch. “Painting” the sidewalk with water, a derivative of an idea from the book Games to [...]

Back in the game with kool-aid playsilks

Things are settling down a bit here. I’ve managed to set aside three nights to work on V’s play silks, a project that has been on my to-do list for months. Play silks are simply pieces of silk fabrics, usually square or rectangular, that are dyed in various colors. They are extremely versatile for imaginative [...]

Natural sandpit tutorial
June 15th, 2010 · 1 Comment · crafty, nature
Start with a pile of free logs from around the neighborhood. Chop them up into different lengths with a borrowed electric chainsaw. Arrange them in a tight circle. You can even notch the sides so they fit tightly together. I requested that one log be placed on its side for easier entry. Add play sand, [...]
Activity bags
May 26th, 2010 · No Comments · crafty, fun with kids
We have an upcoming beach vacation, and I’ve been making some Montessori-inspired activity bags for the plane ride. I first learned about activity bags here (and with nicer packaging). From the top left side, there’s a felt story board. I cut the shapes freehand from my felt stash. A color matching activity using the sensory [...]
